March 1 – 2, 2025

What a weekend for Cypress Ski Club. Over 100 volunteers came together to create two days of sunny Slalom for 140+ U14 men and women racers. The race ran down Bowen Face, next to Midway Chair, at Cypress Mountain Resort. “This was the smoothest race day I’ve experienced yet”, said experienced Race Office volunteer Clara Cheong.

Beautiful weather made for a comfortable time on the hill, though snow conditions required extra effort from the course crew to maintain.

“We were lucky to enjoy some incredible racing, but none of it would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our volunteers. To the Cypress Ski Club crew and all our amazing friends from the other Coast Zone mountains—we truly appreciate your time, effort, and enthusiasm. Your commitment to the sport and to these young athletes is what makes events like this possible.” Kim Mohr, Cypress Ski Club President.

U14 is an exciting age to watch ski racers, as these young athletes are in many stages of development. Performance and strength is variable and can keep you on your toes as a spectator. It’s also a time to witness tight bonds of friendships between young people who spend 4+ days a week together. Up in the start gate you can see sparks of aspiration starting to really take flame, and how they are kindled by coaches. And down at the finish line you see bare emotions, pure self confidence, sportsmanship, and camaraderie between teammates.

U14 Coach Ferdi was proud of his team’s results. “On the first day, Pritam Biln was rewarded for her big commitment and improvement, finishing in the Top 10 for the first time this season. On the boys’ side, Jayden Cai returned to first place after his DNF on the second day at Tyee in mid-February. Wyatt Orr continued his strong performance, finishing in the Top 10 once again—his fifth time in the Top 10 across five races. What a day.” Ferdi said.

On the second day, Aletheia Yuen, a first-year U14, overcame her Saturday disappointment (DNF in the first run) and bounced back to finish in the Top 10 (10th place), following her Top 5 finish at the Tyee race. Pritam Biln also secured a second Top 10 finish in a row! On the boys’ side, our two solid U14 group leaders maintained their form: Jayden Cai secured his 5th win in 6 races, and Wyatt Orr achieved his 5th Top 10 finish in 5 races.

“A record number of racers competed at Cypress Mountain this weekend. The sun accompanied us all through the weekend, and our course crew and a high number of volunteers helping out contributed to a successful event. It was great to see everyone helping out, and to see our team performing and skiing to the best of their abilities. Top ten and podium results are proof of the level of our racers. A big thank you to Cypress Mountain and all sponsors that support us throughout the season.”  said Raul Anguita, Program Director.
