Under 14 Alpine Skiing Program

Advance into formal racing

All Cypress Ski Club programs have been developed to follow Alpine Canada’s recommendations for Long Term Skier Development for Alpine Ski Racing, as detailed in their AIM-2-WIN model.

The U14 program is the culmination of the “Learn to Train” stage. The end of this phase marks an important technical benchmark. Skiers must have a solid technical foundation in all situations and demonstrate an understanding of dynamical, athletic turns. Event-specific skills are trained and the tactical aspects, as course inspection, basic line and turn shape understanding in the course are practiced. Sport, cultural and lifestyle habits are introduced. Racers learn how to deal with winning and losing, and to set their own personal goals and develop the work ethics to achieve them. The same psychological skills as in the U12 program are reinforced. More complex visualization is introduced, along with relaxation and focusing techniques. Training using free skiing in an extensive way, plus the use of specifically designed environments makes this program fun and challenging.

Formal racing is now the norm, attending several events throughout the Province, culminating with the Annual Provincial Championships. All races are additional costs and not included in program fees.

Training camps are offered year round. They are optional and their cost is not included in the program fee. Read about camps.

Summer & Fall Dryland Training

While the on-hill season begins when snow falls, the dryland training season begins in June! Our optional summer and fall dryland sessions help prepare athletes for the season. Fees apply.

Typically sessions are two weeknights and one day in the weekend from mid June through mid August. Fall sessions begin again in September through November.

U14 athletes are expected to attend or keep good conditioning during the summer and fall in consultation with the Program Director or Head Coach.

Duration

Starts with an optional Fall Camp.

The on snow starts at Cypress as soon as the mountain opens. If Cypress opens late, alternative skiing sites will be chosen. Program ends second weekend of April

Training Camps

The U14 program includes a Christmas Camp at no additional cost and optional Fall and Spring camps, at additional cost

Optional Races & Camps

In addition to regular training, there are also competitive opportunities through Coast Zone races which culminate with the annual Provincial championships. Athletes can expect 5-6 races within the Coast Zone and provincial races in any of the zones within BC. In addition, athletes may qualify for U14 Westerns, U14 Can-Am and Whistler Cup. All races are additional costs and not included in program fees.

Training camps are offered year round. They are optional and their cost is not included in the program fee. Training camps during the school year take place, if possible, during long weekends to minimize children’s absence from school. These typically include Whistler Super Camp, Glacier Camp in Whistler in July, Fall Camp in Apex or nearby mountain with snow, Speed Camp in Whistler. Additional camps may be added throughout the season.

Camp and race fees vary and depend on participation and location. Every effort is done to minimize the costs while not compromising the safety of our children and the quality of training.
