All our programs have been developed to follow Alpine Canada’s recommendations for Long Term Skier Development for Alpine Ski Racing, as detailed in their AIM-2-WIN model.
The U12 program is a ski-racing based program for 10-11 year olds. It aims to create great skiers and excellent racers who love the sport of skiing and racing. The days are packed full of highly engaging activities that are blended to maximize learning and fun for this age. About 70% of time is a mix of technical free-skiing drills, expertly set drill courses and several fun competitive events, and about 30% of time is spent in terrain parks, moguls, trees, various jumps and paths. We feel that this program provides an ideal experience and skill base for a wide variety of future ski or ski-race endeavors and enjoyment. There seems to be something about being part of a high performance team in the mountains and many have found this program to be an enjoyable, exciting and deeply rewarding experience – often parents and coaches just as much as kids.
The key focus of the U12 program is to consolidate and refine the basic skiing skills learned in the U10 program. This is considered the beginning of the “Learn to Train” stage. Windows of trainability allow for the development of specific motor skills and coordination needed in alpine skiing. General fitness through dryland is introduced, and doing other sports is recommended.
There are about 7-8 competitive event opportunities throughout the season. Some of the events are a mixed skill competition w the team moving through various skill competition stations such as speed trap, jump distance, moguls, quick feet, in addition to short SL or GS courses. Other events are: Slalom, Giant Slalom or Kombi (SL & GS mixed together). Other opportunities often include a Ski-Cross event in Whistler as well as a speed skills camp also in Whistler.
The majority of events are in close proximity at Whistler and Grouse (also Hemlock and Seymour depending on the season). There is one main race event in Sun Peaks in March that requires 2 nights stay where kids are to be accompanied by parents or chaperone. Many families enjoy spending some extra days at Sun Peaks as it is during Spring Break. Competitions are priced on a cost basis and charged separately to the program cost.
